Memorial Service for Dwight Douglas "Pete" Gray

Charlotte, NC - Mr. Dwight Douglas "Pete" Gray, 72, of Charlotte, NC, saved by the grace of God and blood of His Savior Jesus Christ, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at The Pavilion Health Center at Brightmore of South Charlotte after a brave battle with Alzheimer's disease. 

Pete was born May 7, 1946 in Gadsden, SC and a graduate of Lower Richland High School and the University of Maryland. He served in the United States Air Force from 1963-1972 as a Russian linguist, serving tours of duty in Germany and Turkey. His work as a technical writer and trainer led him to many places across the country such as Allied General Nuclear Services in Barnwell, SC, United Engineers, Philadelphia, PA, Arizona Public Service, Farmington, NM, and Westinghouse-Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. 

Pete was a devoted husband, loving father, and one-of-a-kind Opa. He enjoyed gardening and telling corny jokes. He collected stamps, specializing in Canadian Military POW camps which earned him the Sam C. Nickle Award for Best Military Exhibit twice. Pete was an avid reader of history and student of Biblical doctrine. He was a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC traveling to the Ukraine in 2010 as part of a mission team. He gave generously to others and his family remembers him as a professional chili chef.

A memorial service for Pete will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Harvest Baptist Church, 153 Miller Pond Road, Rock Hill, SC with Dr. Marshall Fant III officiating. Dr. Mantle A. Nance will provide additional reading of scripture. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.  

Pete leaves his wife of 48 years, Diane Reynolds Gray; daughter, Melanie Gray Moore (Mark) of Concord, NC; daughter, Marguerite Elizabeth "Molly" Gray of Charlotte, NC; Julie Diane Gray of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Austin Caleb Moore and Lenox Holland Moore; mother, Betty Jean Gray of Columbia, SC; brother, Harry Ray Gray of Columbia, SC; and sister, Melanie Gray Rease of Eastover, SC.
